Cathay Pacific (CX, Hong Kong International) has firmed purchase rights for 14 additional B777-9s, upping its commitment for the type to 35 units in total. The agreement is the carrier's first deal with Boeing since 2013.
The airline expects all of its B777-9s to be delivered by 2034, it said in a stock market filing. Due to the manufacturer's ongoing delays, the airline recently confirmed that the first delivery will slip to 2027.
The new agreement also includes new purchase rights for seven more B777-9s.
The aircraft will be powered by General Electric GE9X engines, the only available engine variant for the type.
Cathay Pacific's widebody passenger fleet currently comprises forty-three A330-300s, thirty A350-900s, eighteen A350-1000s, seventeen B777-300s, and thirty-five B777-300ERs. The A330s and non-ER B777s are used predominantly for short- and medium-haul flights. The carrier has a firm order for thirty A330-900Ns, ch-aviation data shows.
