DHL Aviation SSA (Sub-Saharan Africa) has announced it has based two dedicated B737-400(SF) freighters, sourced from Air Ghana (GO, Accra) and operated under DHL Express branding, at Lagos to extend the logistics giant's reach across West Africa and beyond.

A spokesperson for the company confirmed to ch-aviation that the aircraft in question are 9G-ACC (msn 26298) and 9G-MTA (msn 26069). The spokesperson added that it is wet-leasing the two freighters from Air Ghana. DHL Aviation SSA is part of the DHL Express business. ADS-B data shows that both are based in Lagos and cover Nigeria, Togo, Côte d'Ivoire, and Ghana.

In a statement, the company said that basing the freighters at Lagos enhances transit times and improves delivery predictability. "As the only integrator with a dedicated air network in Sub-Saharan Africa, DHL continues to expand its aviation uplift to meet growing demand from West African businesses across key sectors, including e-commerce, perishables, energy, and life sciences & healthcare," it said.

"As trade expands across Africa under the African Continental Free Trade Area, businesses are demanding predictable transit times and consistent delivery performance. The two dedicated aircrafts will be integrated into DHL Aviation's African air network, strengthening connections on critical Africa-Europe and Africa-Asia trade lanes," added Anthony Beckley, VP for operations and aviation at DHL Express SSA.

According to ch-aviation fleet data, the 33.5-year-old 9G-MTA has been owned by Air Ghana since November 2025, having first been delivered to Air Ukraine in 1992 and having served with Malev, Solaseed Air, and Swiftair. The 32.1-year-old sistership, 9G-ACC, is owned by Swiftair and has been leased to Air Ghana since November 2024. It was first delivered in 1994 to Turkish Airlines and also flew with Blue Panorama Airlines.
