Emirates (EK, Dubai International) has placed an incremental order for sixty-five B777-9s, increasing its total commitment for the B777X family to 270 units.
The carrier initially ordered 115 B777-9s and thirty-five B777-8 during the 2013 Dubai Air Show, hoping for the deliveries to begin in 2020. Despite multiple delays and heavy criticism of Boeing, the airline subsequently upped the commitment in 2023. Its order book prior to the new order comprised 170 B777-9s and thirty-five B777-8s.
The order was announced during the Dubai Air Show, amid rumours of more orders to be announced by both Emirates and its sister carrier flydubai during the event.
With 270 B777X aircraft now on order, Emirates is poised to be the type's largest operator by a considerable margin. The second-largest customer, Qatar Airways, has firm orders for 124 aircraft of the family.
Boeing currently expects the B777-9 deliveries to begin in 2027, seven years behind the original schedule.
