Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BG, Dhaka) has placed an order for five B787-10s and six B737-8s, the companies revealed after a meeting of executives and government officials during the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The order comes on top of an earlier order this year that saw Biman select eight B787-10s, two B787-9s, and four B737-8s. At the time, the carrier said it would use the B787-10s to develop its Middle East operations further, as well as long-haul services to North America and Europe.

"As the national flag carrier, we remain committed to developing Biman's network and capabilities in a manner that responds to the connectivity needs of the people of Bangladesh, our expatriate community, business and tourism. This agreement is one part of a broader, carefully considered plan to strengthen the country's international connectivity in the years ahead," Biman chairman Rumee A Hossain said.

The deal comes as Biman has been working with both Boeing and Airbus on new orders. The carrier is also looking to book four A350-900s and six A321neo jets.

Earlier this year, the government of Bangladesh signed a trade agreement with the United States, pushing for closer cooperation with Boeing and aircraft orders from the manufacturer. However, the incumbent government said it would probe all aircraft orders signed by the previous administration. Additionally, the European Union's ambassador to Bangladesh has called for a level playing field in the country's public procurement processes as the aforementioned order from Airbus is yet to be formalised.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines currently operates a fleet of 19 aircraft, comprising four B737-800s, four B777-300ERs, four B787-8s, two B787-9s, and five DHC-8-Q400s, according to ch-aviation data.
