Sunrise Airways has suspended all flights to and from Port au Prince until further notice for security reasons, after one of its aircraft received bullet damage on Sunday, November 23.
The Miami Herald reported that a domestic flight between Les Cayes and Port au Prince was struck by bullets while landing in Haiti’s capital. No injuries were reported.
In a statement issued after the incident, the carrier (which had only recently announced an increase in domestic connectivity, including several flights via Port au Prince) said the decision to halt all scheduled services from the city would only be reversed when conditions allow.
“The safety of our passengers and employees remains the company’s top priority. No risks will be taken until all conditions are fully met to operate safely and confidently.”
Sunrise Airways had restarted flights to Port au Prince earlier in the year, after suspending the operations due to heightened gang violence in the capital and relocating its main hub to Cap Haitien. To restore connectivity, the company and the government signed an agreement in which Haiti would provide a supplementary financial guarantee to compensate for material damages and any potential victims, in addition to the airline’s insurance provider, ch-aviation reported at the time.
