The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has updated its helicopter route charts with permanent changes following the January 29 midair collision at Washington National between an army Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk and a CRJ700 operated by PSA Airlines on behalf of American Airlines as American Eagle which killed 67 people.
The recent changes also include modifications to helicopter zones at Washington Dulles and Baltimore International, the FAA said.
It has also taken further additional actions at Washington National, including establishing procedures to eliminate helicopter and fixed-wing mixed traffic near the airport, eliminated the use of visual separation within five miles of the airport, and published modifications to helicopter zones and routes, moving them farther away from flight paths at the airport.
Reuters reported that the FAA has also been scrutinising aircraft traffic flows around Burbank and Van Nuys in California, which are less than ten miles apart and serve a wide mix of aircraft.
