Firefly (FY, Penang) plans to move its jet operations from Kuala Lumpur Subang to a new base at Kuala Lumpur International starting August 19, 2025. The move follows the earlier exit of AirAsia from the downtown airport, which reopened to jet traffic a year ago.
Parent Malaysia Aviation Group announced that Firefly will gradually launch B737-800 services from Kuala Lumpur's main airport to Tawau, Kuching, Kota Kinabalu, Singapore Changi, Johor Bahru, Kota Bharu, Kuala Terengganu, and Sibu until September 3.
The airline will retain its ATR72-500 operations out of Kuala Lumpur Subang, serving to Alor Setar, Johor Bahru, Kota Bharu, Langkawi, Kuala Terengganu, and Singapore Seletar.
"The move to Kuala Lumpur International allows Firefly to scale its jet operations more efficiently, improve passenger connectivity and better leverage MAG’s shared capabilities in engineering, ground handling and catering," said the group's managing director, Izham Ismail.
Firefly's move will bring it closer to sister airline Malaysia Airlines, which has its main hub at Kuala Lumpur International. While Malaysia Airlines currently operates 69 routes out of the airport, Firefly only maintains service from Kuala Lumpur International to Penang.
Following the end of the LCC's jet operations at Subang, Batik Air Malaysia will remain as the sole scheduled passenger jet operator at the airport. Its CEO Chandran Rama Muthy recently told ch-aviation that the carrier had no plans to exit the facility, which it sees as much more convenient for point-to-point traffic to/from Kuala Lumpur.
ch-aviation data shows that Firefly's fleet comprises five B737-800s and nine ATR72-500s.
